First, I have to share this treasure box, inspired by an old English divination rhyme for counting crows (and yep - that's where the band got the name). The crow perched on top is sculpted from paperclay, and inside the box there's a trail of little crow footprints. LOTS of fun, this one, and listed now on eBay:

ReplyDeleteThe rhymes oldest origins is from the counting of magpie crows as they gather in groups in the spring & autumn, to resolve territorial conflicts and social standing. These gatherings, called parliaments, probably gave rise to the many nursery rhymes and poems about Magpies, such as:
One for sorrow, two for mirth,
Three for a wedding, four for a birth,
Five for silver, six for gold,
Seven for a secret not to be told.
Eight for heaven, nine for hell,
And ten for the devil's own sel'.
Or more commonly:
One for sorrow, two for joy;
Three for a girl, four for a boy;
Five for silver, six for gold;
Seven for a secret, never to be told;
Eight for a wish, nine for a kiss;
Ten for a bird that's best to miss.

Hi Carolee...oooooooh I LOVE your "counting crows" box! Your artistic abilities are amazing. What I wouldn't give to be able to paint half as good as you do! I so love my jazz cats CD cabinet. I stop by as often as possible just to drool over your latest creations.
