Lot's of magic afoot in the studio these days, and all of it original, one of a kind art....
I adore working like this - completely immersing myself in one piece at a time, pouring all that energy into a single creation. It allows me to almost become lost in a piece....absolute bliss as an artist!
I know some artists prefer to work on pieces en masse, and I do admire that. It certainly seems more productive....But alas, I've never been much good at multi-tasking. Can't even drive and talk on the phone at the same time, hehe!
The reason I mention this is I've been receiving emails lately asking for prints, postcards and patterns. I've always been sooooooooo reluctant to go down that road - like it goes against the grain of the way I usually work....
But working this way also has it's limitations, and there's the nagging thought that offering just a few of these might make my work more accessible. Might make it possible in these challenging economic times for more people to have little bit of Halloween whimsy ala King of Mice.
So here's my question. Questions, actually.
Do you think a few packages of cards would fly on Etsy?
Do you think a couple of simple painting patterns would be appealing?
And if so, what would you like to see?
Inquiring minds want to know. ;)

Prints of your art on cards would do well I think. Gives people a change to own some of your art at a price they can afford. Would open you up to a whole new audience.
ReplyDeleteHow about T-shirts? It's almost THAT time of year and I'll bet they would go over well at Ghoultide Gathering also! It wouldn't cost much to get a screenprint of one or a couple of your designs and you would make lots more back....
ReplyDeleteI for one adore your art but have never been able to afford any.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see prints and cards etc and i'm sure would be able to buy something even on my teeny budget ;)

en masse... me think you are speaking of me ;)
ReplyDeleteYes, to the cards - but find a good, high quality place to print them.
Pattern packets - I am a fan of "Wicked Jack", any of your Jack O' Lanterns, owls and silhouette figures etc.
Think t-shirts is great idea too, but a nice canvas knitting bag/tote may be something to think about too.
Lori
Everything you have mentioned would sell like hot cakes (weird english saying lol) your art is fantastic and many people would love to own it.
ReplyDeleteI can completely understand what you say about making each peice unique (kinda sucks for the people who loose out) as I am much the same with my art (not that I sell mine)
Why don't you do a trial run, a select few designs to be used as prints get them on the web and I am sure that you'll have people shouting out for more. On top of this though it makes sense to earn as much as you can and this is a great ways of making more money!
YOU are an artist that painters could only hope to aspire to..such as myself! Patterns would be wonderful and may be the only affordable option some have for being able to display your incredible gift. I will keep my fingers crossed that this may be an avenue you seek to start. Continued success to you, Carolee.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Micki, Prints are cards would be more affordable for me.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Wasn't speaking of you, Lori....Actually most artists I know work on more than one piece at a time...I wish I could, but once I start something I tend to give it my sole focus....I'm the same way with books. Can't have more than one going at a time. Limited attention span I guess. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love your art, too, but it's out of my [miniscule] price range right now. Cards would be lovely! So would a tote bag or two.
ReplyDeleteMy grandchildren, who live far away, are now old enough for me to write to, and I am amassing a collection of cards to use for that purpose—yours would be perfect.
Hey Carolee,
ReplyDeleteCards would be great. Something else to think of is your work would translate beautifully to needlepoint.
All you have to do is draw on the needlepoint canvas with waterproof markers add a color key on the side
and viola! The customer can then buy the coordinating yarn and a whole new world opens up.
A resounding YES!!! As a decorative painter, I would love to recreate some of your Halloween art. Please consider it!
ReplyDeleteAll great ideas, do a few sample ones see how they go, I'm sure they will fly. You have been given the domestic witch blog award on my pyewacketts blog, Lindax
ReplyDeleteCards would be perfect, your boldly colored graphics are a natural for print! Patterns...I vote no. Why encourage lesser quality knock-offs? If someone has skill to paint, they should be able to come up with a design of their own.
ReplyDeleteI think your ideas are great. Especially patterns. I am also one of those artist that can only focus on one piece of art at a time. good luck.

Your work is so cool and I feel it would be a wonderful addition if you added cards, or maybe some sort of canvas print art.
ReplyDeleteYour work commands high bids which does leave alot of us out of the running for one of your awesome originals.
One of my favorites was your Halloween game! Susan

I am hosting a giveaway on my blog for a first run Artistry of Poland blown glass ornament of my original design, everyone is invited to enter!
I would absolutely LOVE to see you put out some patterns for some of your pieces. I love the way you "Play" with color in your pieces. I can draw pretty good, but get stuck with my art in the "coloring" process LOL!

I agree about the cards. Your work is wonderful and would make beautiful cards. William is right about patterns, I wouldn't. Something else I thought would be great are those flags or banners that people have outdoors near the front of the house. T-shirts, mugs, and book bags all great ideas.
ReplyDeleteLeah
Maybe if you are worried do them as limited edition prints so you only do so many? I love the tote bag idea.
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, yes!! Do it :)
ReplyDeleteI'd buy a tote bag, a set of note cards, a coffee mug, anything... I'd love to have some of your art in our house at a price we can afford!
Great ideas, I love the painting pattern idea.
ReplyDeleteAs a prior screenprinter of t-shirts, I wouldn't go that route if I were you UNLESS you did only a 1 color print job - maybe of your silouettes (I KNOW I spelled that wrong!). The screen charge, etc. is just not cost effective and you probably wouldn't sell enough - not cause your art isn't wonderful - just cause they're t-shirts.
ReplyDeleteI would go with painting patterns, maybe some cards.
Oh and the other thing if you go en masse, it's not OOAK anymore. But that's ok - it's not like your sending your pieces off to China to be reproduced (Thank goodness!) Will Moses does wonderful cards, why couldn't you? I'm sure you could Dearie!
