An entire weekend, or better yet, a week, of total immersion in art; not the kind where we're fulfilling obligations and orders, but the kind where we soak up more inspiration and knowledge than we know what to do with...
Sounds like heaven, right?
I've been browsing the John C. Campbell Folk School site of late, dreaming about the luxury of taking a little trip to N.C. sometime next year, perhaps meeting some friends there as well...
Folk art and the Blue Ridge mountains - could it get any better?
There are other retreats and workshops I've considered as well - watercolor, colored pencil, etc...And of course, there's Art and Soul, although I'm not sure I have the sensibility and patience for mixed media...
How about you? In the workshop and/or retreat of your dreams, what would be taught and what would be included? What would the setting be like? How long would you stay?
Just curious. ;)

I've been to Art & Soul three times, and Art-is-You once. I really enjoy myself at these retreats--but if I could make them ideal, they'd be less exhausting. I get so excited at being around other like-minded artists that I spend a lot of time socializing, going out to dinner, etc., when probably, i should be resting in my room.
ReplyDeleteMy ideal retreat would have lots of different choices of media and teachers, and Art & Soul does just that. I can't say enough good about it! Glenny really goes out of her way to make it a fantastic event.
Someday I'd like to attend the A&S in Portland. So far I've only been to Hampton, Va.
I'm always up for trying any new media. It's simply inspiring to be in a classroom space with the creative energy of all the artists feeding off one another and coming up with more and more fantastical ideas and art pieces. Ahhh

Gosh, there are so many I would love to do.....
ReplyDeleteWhat would be heaven is a summer long retreat to write and illustrate a whimsical little book.
Or maybe get wonderfully immersed in the calligraphic arts.
Or polymer clay mosaics.
Or collage with nature inspired ephemera.
I could go on......
By the way, I toured the John Campbell Folk School and LOVE it!!!!!

My friend and colored pencil artist Joanna Powell Colbert went to a art retreat in the Pacific Northwest some weeks back, and I started feeling the pull to do something like that, amateur dillitant that I am.
ReplyDeleteHi! I have been wanting to take classes at John C Campbell since I read about it 2 years ago. I'm far away in WA, but lucky for me, that means I'm close to the Portland Art and Soul. I'm so excited to be going for the first time this year.
ReplyDeleteI think my dream place may be John C though...my husband could come along and take their cooking/ baking classes. It would be a great getaway for both of us.
