Of Replenishing the Well, and Serendipity

In her book "The Artist's Way", author Julia Cameron likens the pool of creativity to a well - and as we all know, one cannot draw from an empty well. It must be replenished from time to time. ;)

It's easy to forget this, so caught up are we in deadlines and commitments, and often just keeping our heads above water...Until one day, a little voice inside us says "enough"...says "take some time"...says "slow down"...says "breathe"....

The voice has been growing louder these last few weeks, until this morning, when despite a very full commission schedule, it got the better of me...

So a word to John (who is truly a saint when it comes to humoring my last minute whims) and we gassed up the Beetle and made a run out to St. Peter's Village, a historic old mining town on the banks of the French Creek...

I have such fond memories of visiting St Peters as a kid, and climbing around on these big boulders...

(Probably break my neck these days, hehe)....

The village itself is very small and very quaint, changing very little since it's days as a "company" town back in the 1800's. Only now, many of the houses along the main street are little shops...

I remember St Peter's Village back in the 1970's, when (after the quarry was mined out), it became a popular shopping and dining destination. Many of the shops have long since closed down, but a few small businesses are still there, and hoping to make a comeback. I thought this one was interesting - you can't really see the sign in the photo, but its says "Nana's", then "storytelling and lunch", which I found so charming, and a pity it wasn't open.

There's also a wonderful little bakery...
Um, OK, big bakery. ;) And an elegant Inn, where I understand the dinners are superb...

But my favorite was the West Hanover Winery's shop. Nevermind that 11AM is a bit early for a tasting, hehe - I just had to try this Buckwheat Honey Mead...

Liquid heaven, *sigh*..... Seriously, if you're withing striking distance of either St. Peters or the winery itself, you MUST try it.

We also visited a little antique shop, where I (with John's, ahem, "help") resisted the temptations of several antique pinkeeps - but not so this antique clock case. It was speaking to me, saying "Take me to Ghoultide!"...and well, I just couldn't ignore it, could I?

Of course I couldn't. Not sure what's up with the baby blue interior, but rest assured by the time I finish with it, it will be the most wicked cool, Witch's apothecary cabinet you've ever seen. ;)

So yes, not only did I replenish the creative well - I replenished the wooden painting surface supply as well.

Serendipity. ♥

And now it's back to work! I'm very close to finishing a super-fun clock commission, and then it's on to a Practical Magic inspired footstool, another Goddess painting, and more commissions and Ghoultide Gathering pieces. If only there were more hours in the day!

Full Moon Magic + New Paintings

There's something magical and enchanting about the full moon, don't you think? Sometimes, even in winter, if you step outside you can almost feel it shining down, bathing you in it's magic...

I've long been fascinated by the Native American tradition of naming the full moons, and several months ago had one of those "aha!" moments when I thought it would be interesting to pair each month's full moon with a corresponding Goddess. Many of the goddesses - whether Greek, Roman, Celtic or otherwise - have a mythological connection to the moon and it's properties. And some connections I anticipate making myself, focusing on the traits of individual Goddesses.

The first piece (original sold, but prints coming soon) is "Artemis", the Goddess for January's Full Wolf Moon...

Daughter of Zeus and Leto, Goddess of the hunt and of the wilderness, and some legends say shapeshifter from woman to wolf, she's perfect for the January moon...

The original paintings will include the names of the month, the moon and the Goddess, lettered around the edge, and the prints will be the image alone.

This painting was a double blessing to paint - not only the moon, but a grey wolf! I love wolves, and one of these days will make it over to Speedwell Forge (about 15 minutes away) to visit the wolf sanctuary there. Such inspiration!

Next month's full moon is called the Snow Moon, and I'm thinking "Chione", Goddess of Snow, and daughter of Boreas, God of the North Wind - just the name is stirring up some pretty vivid imagery. Look for this one next month. :)

In the meantime, there are commissions in the works, as well as a couple of new Halloween pieces (it's NEVER too early for Halloween, hehe.)

Oh, and a quick update on the home front - John is coming home tomorrow (yay!!) Nine long days in the hospital is quite enough, and while we understand the need for it, and bless his doctors and caregivers for helping his heart to heal, well....we miss him. So tomorrow is a happy day all around.

Of course, all cats are sweet angels, which makes them perfect subjects for Valentine's day. This one, which I've named "Valentine", can be found in my Etsy shop. :)

Sneaky-Peeky

Just popping in with a peek at two sweet little treat boxes up for grabs on a first-come basis, on tomorrow's PFATT Marketplace...

As always, the update happens on the tenth of the month, at 10AM pacific - so 1PM eastern, and the pieces will go to the first email or emails I receive. (Regretfully, the Hershey's kisses are not included, their days - nay hours - being numbered, hehe). :)

I had so much fun with these two. There' something about the pink and red and white combination that just makes me smile. :) UPDATE - Both pieces have now sold.

Another Work in Progress, Another Hospital Stay

Flying in quickly this morning to share a photo of the latest work in progress - another arctic painting...


After seeing the video of Siku, the polar bear cub, I just had to paint one. Soooooo cute. Look for it on Etsy later today. :)

On the home front, it's back to the hospital for John, who is having another cardioversion, in conjunction with some tests and new meds. Assuming all goes well, he should be home by the weekend, and in the meantime, I have all these furkids to keep me company here at the house. :)

While it's tempting to bemoan the need for another procedure, we're just ever so thankful that this technology is possible! When I listen to his artificial valve ticking away, I can't help but think how blessed we are to live in a time where medical miracles like this exist.

I'm off to the hospital now, and as soon as he's settled, it's back here to paint. After the polar cub is finished, it's on to Baba Yaga!

A Wintry Work in Progress

Just popping in to share a few in-progress pics on a wooden tea tray. It began with a good base coat of ivory acrylic paint, then a checkerboard border, blocking in the figures, and doing a bit of detail on the trees...

By this time, I was feeling the need for color, so began with some vibrant reds, then dressed the gnome, and gave the polar bear a face...

Finally, after lots more detail, and a bit of varnish, the finished piece...

If there's such a thing as a "zen" kind of piece, this was surely it. Such a blessing to paint, so relaxing, and took me back to childhood folk and fairy tales.

A New Practical Magic Piece and a Crafty Return

This is the time of year when inspiration comes at such a fast and furious pace, it's difficult to keep up with it all! Ideas are spinning and swirling around in my brain like a holiday cyclone, and I'm trying to capture as many of them as possible.

Before we get into upcoming holiday goodies, here's a peek at a very special project which has occupied much of my time lately. A wonderful, long time collector commissioned this child's chair, with a Practical Magic theme...


As is often the case with commissions, it took longer than anticipated, but I'm really happy with the result; the roses and toads on the base, the magickal accoutrements on the seat, and the witches jumping off the of that gorgeous clifftop house above. Here's a little detail...


On the back of the chair, it says "There's a little witch in every woman."

Fun, yes?! I swear, I have the best *job* in the world. ♥

With this one winging its way to the west coast this week, the focus shifts to holiday work - specifically a Harvest Santa, which I hope to offer on a first-come basis on this month's PFATT Marketplace (we'll see if I can get it finished under the wire!)...And of course, the Harvest Santa made me think of a Vineyard Santa too, so that may be coming soon as well...and a seaside Santa, and a...and a...

See what I mean? A cyclone, I tell you. ;)

And in the midst of all this creativity, I'm very briefly back to painting a few (ahem) crafty welcome signs. It's been years since I've painted these in quantity, and I much prefer to work on one piece at a time. But in this economy we do what we must, so John and I will be bringing about 150 of these (varying designs) to the annual Holiday Craft Show at the Fairfax High School, in Fairfax, Virginia on the weekend of November 19th and 20th. I'll be there all day, personalizing signs as people shop. So if you're in the area, do drop by and say hello!

Until then, our little house looks a bit like Santa's workshoop, hehe...


First snowmen, then mailbox/chickadee signs completed, so now it's onto Santa in the Moon...

There's also much to be done on the home front, including Thanksgiving shopping, and getting the house decorated for the holidays. Fortunately, the china cabinet is already decorated. Yep, I'm a little embarrassed to say all the Christmas teapots, plates, books and greenery have been sitting there since last Christmas. Oh well - at least the tree hasn't been up this whole time, hehe.

So stay tuned for lots of goodies coming up, and in the meantime, let's all remember to take the occasional breath to savor the season; a good winter read and cup of tea, snuggling on the sofa to watch an old holiday movie, Yuletide gatherings with friends and family, listening to beautiful music, and shopping locally, and handmade.

The Final Stretch...

With less than two weeks until we pack up the Beetle and head to Michigan for the Ghoultide Gathering, well - insanity doesn't even begin to describe it. The studio looks as though a reporter should be standing in the center giving a damage assessment...

And the only thing keeping the rest of house even reasonably intact is my wonderful husband (or he likes to call himself, "the mice president"). Thank heaven for helpful husbands, eh? He's pretty much taken over housecleaning and errand running until after the show, God love him.

No more sneak peeks I'm afraid (aside from the partial in-progress photo above) - much more fun for collectors to be surprised at the show, I think!

But aside from show pieces, I did paint this little treat box, which will probably go on Etsy in the next day or two. A bit different, but the shape of the box so reminded me of a haunted house, I just went with it...


Those stones took forever to paint, but I think they look kind of cool. It says "Boo!" inside. :)

I'll be ordering a few prints tomorrow as well, and adding them to the Etsy shop Wednesday or Thursday, so stay tuned.

That's about it for now. I'm off to brew a pot of tea, and read a chapter or two before turning in. Just started this one...

The Finished Painting

Sew Many Blessings (Reprised)

This is the second sewing chest I've created this month - "sew" much fun, hehe. :)

Choosing and arranging the embellishments on top was almost as much fun as the painting process. If you look carefully, you'll spot tiny scissors, a sewing needle, three spools of thread, and even a tiny sewing machine among the buttons and trinkets and crystals.

It's up for grabs on Etsy now, where you'll find additional photos, including the interior, which includes a decoupaged tray.

I've also replenished the print supply on Etsy, so please do take a peek.

Next up is a clock, and then I'll be spending a few days painting for the upcoming Ghoultide Gathering show - just a few weeks away now, teehe!

A Wonderful Weekend, and New Work!

I'll begin by saying we don't go out very often. Almost never, in fact. Between the budget and my crazy work schedule, it's a luxury in which we seldom indulge.

But today was Mother's Day, and a special occasion. Our beautiful daughter Courtney and her BFF SarahGrace (one of two honorary daughters with whom we've been blessed) traveled out here from the city (Philly) to meet us for brunch at what could easily become my new favorite place. Soooooo good, and my only regret is that as we were leaving, a group of Celtic musicians were setting up. (Note to self - make a much later reservation next time!)

After ordering, I was presented with a gift bag containing my favorite summer scent, a cookbook I've been wanting for AGES, and a box of truffles (I know, like I need them, lol).

It was altogether a perfect day, which I finished up with a little painting...


This magical little pair will be up for grabs on the PFATT Marketplace on a first-come basis, Tuesday the 10th, at 10AM Pacific time. I just LOVE these chunky canvases, because there's no need for a frame, and the little ones can fit almost anywhere (these are 5" x 5"). :)

At the risk of jumping all over the place with this post (yeah, I know, scattered artist syndrome) I'll close with a quick update on John. This will be his LAST week of radiation (yay!), followed by another week's recovery from the whole ordeal, and we should know soon after if he's in remission. If you're inclined to prayers and positive thoughts, they are, as always, most appreciated!

The First of May!

Wishing everyone a very Happy May Day and a Blessed Beltane to all those who celebrate it!


I'll be spending the day immersed in books and sketches of Middle Earth, and doing a bit of work on a couple of commissions. Later on, the plan is dinner on the grill and a new salad recipe, accompanied by my new favorite drink (sweet tea vodka and lemonade - yummmm). :)

Wish you could all join us for a great big potluck! Wouldn't that be FUN?!

I'll be back very soon with new work, but until then (or at least until this evening) there's still the mending box up for grabs on eBay...

Hedgehogs, Halloween and Housework...

How's that for alliteration? ;)

I'm not OCD about much (and certainly not housework, hehe) but very once in a while an idea grabs hold and won't let go. This week it was hedgehogs. :)

There was a chair...

A clock...

And a springtime welcome sign...

The first two sold before I had a chance to list then anywhere, but the sign is up for grabs on eBay.

Next up is Halloween - more precisely, a Halloween carriage clock, which I hope to have finished in time for the March 31st EHAG Emporium update. If you scroll down the right sidebar of my blog here, you'll see a similar piece. These clocks were discontinued by the manufacturer several years ago and have been nearly impossible to find ever since - but I stumbled on a few more last summer, and was lucky enough to acquire them (after doing a little happy dance!)...Stay tuned for "The Witching Hour". ;)

Which brings us to housework. That little thing I'm NOT so OCD about...

The thing is, between John's radiation treatment (see previous posts) and my need to paint every hour God sends (don't even get me started on gas, co-pays and prescriptions) little things like dusting and sweeping have necessarily fallen by the wayside. Enter three very special young women - our daughter Courtney, her BFF (and our newly adopted, honorary, second daughter) SarahGrace, and our wonderful niece Sarah, who've all very kindly volunteered their time to give us a hand with things around here as I work, and John recuperates.

Courtney and SarahGrace were out today in fact - dusted and swept, brought and prepared a wonderful meal in celebration of John's 54th birthday, and cheered us both greatly...

Sooooooo...blessings from three more angels! There have been others throughout this ordeal as well (you know who you are!) and I can't tell you how heartening it is to know we're not alone in this. What a gift we have in family and friends!

And finally, in the family and friends department, we lost someone very dear to us recently, and attended the memorial just a few days ago. She was a very private person, so I won't post details here, except to say it was an honor and a blessing to know her, and she'll be missed terribly by so many people.

So hold those you love close, give them a hug, and tell them how special they are right now.

Finished! :)

I'm so proud of this one; "The Hare's Lament", inspired by the traditional Irish folk song of the same name...

The hare is running from her pursuers, over a a field of heather here. Celtic knotwork and floral border, which I think gives a bit of a medieval tapestry feel...Acrylic on 20" x 20" gallery canvas. The 3" deep edges are painted solid black, so there's no need for a frame. As someone who used to work in a frame shop, and knows how expensive framing is (often more than the art!) I have to say I'm in LOVE with these deep canvases. :)

Black Cat Enchantment and Forging Ahead...

Hello!

I'm back already with new work.:) Not that I haven't fallen off the wagon once or twice with computer time, but all in all, I'm really working at the balance thing (see previous post).

Although I must admit it's easy to stay focused when I'm completely immersed in a piece, as I was with this one. There's something truly mystical and enchanting about black cats - like magic is afoot when I paint them...

This one is listed on eBay now. :)

On the home front, those of you who've been reading here awhile know about John's recent (and not so recent) health challenges. The short version is that after two major heart surgeries, and a successful recovery, his lymphoma is out of remission again, and he's now facing two rounds of radiation, which will begin in a couple of weeks.

The doctors tell us chances at a full remission are good, although they can't say for how long - but it's slow progressing, which is good, and we'll take what we can get. We're optimistic, and determined to take it one day at a time, but also realize our lives are about to change pretty drastically. For my own part, I'll be maintaining a full painting schedule, taking care of John, the pets and the house, running the errands, doing shipping, and hopefully some of the driving into the city (we're still working on housing and transportation).

So I want to apologize in advance if I'm slow at returning emails and facebook messages, and I ask that at least during this time, everyone refrain from sending me forwards and such. I just don't have time to manage and delete them all - hope you understand. I'll also be limiting shipping runs to twice a week, probably on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Finally, I want to thank all of you for your prayers and positive thoughts, and most especially for your understanding when correspondence and commissions run a bit late. I'm doing my best to keep up, and I will get to it, I promise. :)

John and I are truly blessed to have such amazing friends and family, and I know we'll get through this. Much love to all of you!

A Surreal Day and Some New Work

Have you ever had one of those days where everything seems a little unreal and dreamlike? As if you were watching strange events unfold from afar, feeling a little disoriented, and not quite a part of things? That was my Yesterday...

First, this beautiful and intelligent young woman celebrated her twenty ninth birthday.


TWENTY NINE.

How is that possible? Wasn't it just moments ago I was twenty nine myself, and she was seven?? Wasn't it just moments ago I was reading her stories and taking her to the park to feed the ducks?

I don't feel old enough to have twenty nine year old. But the grey hair and the aches and creaks in my bones tell me it's so, even if memory and sense of time are distorted.

The very same day, I discovered someone from my distant past - teacher, mentor and at one time something far more complicated, had passed away. And I was surprised to feel not only profound sadness, but forgiveness, and a wish that he find peace. I think one of the blessings of aging is the realization that most people do the best they can in life, and that most hurts aren't intentional. It becomes easier to let go. So I wish him God speed, and remember him for the gift of art, and of loving art. That's a lot.

Today, feeling much more myself, I threw myself into new work - and lots of it...

Eight new pieces, destined for eBay and Etsy just as soon as they're completed.

In the meantime, there's a belated birthday lunch tomorrow, another piece to begin for the upcoming PFATT Marketplace update, and commissions to complete.

The Year of the Rabbit, New Work, and Gratitude

Happy Chinese New Year!

Today (well, today here, but although the same date, a day ago in China) marks the shift from the Year of the Tiger to the Year of the Rabbit; A year of calm and serenity, of peace, and of good luck. Sounds good to me. ;)

In honor of the occasion, I painted two Rabbit pieces this week, both going to live with the same collector, but I had such fun with them I want to share. The first is a tea tray...

And the second is a painting on a framed panel, with a calligraphy accent...

I added the full moon because rabbits are also symbols of the moon. ;)

There will be a few other Rabbit pieces as Easter approaches, but in the meantime, it's Valentine trinket boxes, something Celtic in honor of St Patrick's Day, and some very special HALLOWEEN pieces. Not only for eBay, but for the Ghoultide Gathering as well. :)

On the home front, challenges loom, as John faces radiation therapy at Temple University, and I face combining caregiving with painting and household responsibilities. Another one of those situations where the only way out of it is through it, which is where we're going.

Which brings me to the gratitide part.

I want to thank everyone who's either commented here or on facebook, offered prayers and positive energy, purchased my work, or otherwise made this path a lot easier for us to walk (you know who you are). ;) Despite the challenges ahead, we are truly blessed, and incredibly grateful to have you all in our lives.

That's about it for now, but that's enough. It's just about 11PM and if I'm not careful, I'll turn into a pumpkin soon...

Commissions, Commitments and General Craziness

Okay....(deep breath here).....Today is December 9th.

That gives me about ten days to finish three commissions and more than a few requests for trinket boxes and such.

Not to mention half a dozen batches of cookies, decorating the tree and whipping the house into some semblance of order.

Then there are gifts to be made, and cards to be sent.

And a day off next week for John's radiation oncology appointment.

I think if any household needed elves, it would be OURS. I'm just sayin'...

In the meantime, here are a few goodies I consider a start; five little holiday trinket boxes, perfect for gift giving. Two will be on eBay this evening at 9PM eastern, and three will be up for grabs on the PFATT Marketplace...


Next up is another La Befana piece. I'm so smitten with the notion of a Christmas Crone, I need to paint her one more time, and larger. So look for a "Buon Natale" sign very soon....

In the meantime, I hope your season is bright and sparkly, and you're accomplishing all you'd set out to do!!

New Work and Some Thoughts About the Season

Well, it's that time of year again - just a few weeks left to paint all the Yuletide goodies (OK, SOME of the goodies) I'd hoped for eBay and Etsy sales, several pressing commissions to finish, cookies to bake, halls to deck, presents to make, cards to write, and friends to visit.

Each year I make a vow that things will be different NEXT year; I'll be better organized, won't have to work so much, will get an earlier start, will have more funds...but around comes December, and well, some things never change. ;)

I'm managing to paint a few things in between commissions, and have had great fun returning to my roots - if just for a few weeks - as a dog and cat artist. I sooooo love painting our four legged friends, but I'm also remembering why I moved away from it - the requests for different breeds, different colors, different markings can be overwhelming, and while I MUST, I don't like telling people "no, there just isn't time". If you'd like to take a peek, here's one listed on eBay now, a little French bulldog...

In a beret no less...

(John says he should also be smoking a cigarette, but that's just WRONG, haha!)

I also painted a little La Befana box, but she sold right away. She's very folk-artsy, and a prelude to a "Buon Natale" sign I have in the sketching stage...

I love the concept of a Christmas crone, don't you? If you haven't heard of La Befana, click here - she's truly a fascinating character!

I'm also hoping to complete a small chair in the next week or two, and a large, wooden ornament chest. And more trinket boxes and signs, of course. ;)

On a personal, and more serious note, I'd like to update friends and family on John's situation. It seems the interferon is not bringing about the improvement we'd hoped, and it looks as though (with decent Christmas sales and all the planets in alignment with pet-care) John will be starting radiation treatments in the New Year. Your prayers and positive energy are much appreciated as he faces this challenge, and I thank you in advance. :)

He's had a rough road these past couple of years, but the support we've received has been incredible. And while I may as above, lightheartedly bemoan the craziness of the season, I know for certain it's not about the trappings. It's not about the mall, or how much we spend, or the latest electronic gadget. It's not about family feuds and frustration and short tempers. It's not about tinsel and cookies and stockings.

It's about LOVE.

So hug your significant other, hug your kids, hug your pets, and say a prayer to God or Goddess or the Universe or whatever power or energy you believe is out there, in gratitude for every moment you get to spend with them.

And thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my work. Despite the ongoing challenges I feel as though I'm truly blessed.

The Final Countdown....

Well, just five days left until we pack the Beetle (and I do mean PACK, teehee!) and set out for Michigan, and the most magical Halloween art show ever, the Ghoultide Gathering! I know I've posted this video before, but for anyone who hasn't seen it, here's a little sampling of last year's extravaganza....


I'm excited and terrified, thrilled and sleep deprived, and with just a few days of painting time left, have more ideas spinning around in my addled brain than I know what to do with, haha. But I know it will work out, it always does.

The most exciting part is the friends and collectors traveling from all over the country to see the show, and I can't wait to meet everyone in person!

In four short years, Scott Smith and Stephanie Rawson have created what has become the country's premiere Halloween art event, and I can't thank them enough for including me. I'm truly giddy with anticipation, and grateful beyond words for the opportunity to share my work.

Soooooo, I hope to see you there!!! (I'll be the roundish one, dressed in black, with the cane and the dark circles under her eyes, hehe.)

In the meantime, it's back to work!!
